Mode of Action

How does Azospirillum biofertilizer work?

The agricultural effects associated with A. brasilense cannot be attributed to one mechanism alone. Research indicates that selected strains can influence plants through a combination of biological nitrogen fixation, root colonization and plant-growth-associated metabolites.

1. Associative biological nitrogen fixation

Selected A. brasilense strains can convert atmospheric nitrogen gas into reduced nitrogen compounds through the nitrogenase enzyme system under suitable microaerobic and nitrogen-limited conditions.

Some experimental studies have demonstrated transfer or incorporation of bacterially fixed nitrogen into associated plants. However, the amount contributing to crop nutrition varies with the bacterial strain, crop, soil environment, nitrogen availability and quality of root colonization.

For this reason, Azospirillum biofertilizer should not automatically be described as a complete replacement for nitrogen fertilizer.

2. Root system development

Selected strains of A. brasilense produce indole-3-acetic acid and other plant-growth-associated metabolites. These compounds can influence root architecture, including:

Root-hair formation
Root biomass
Total root volume
Root exploration of the surrounding soil

A more developed root system may improve a plant’s capacity to access water and nutrients. The magnitude of the response remains dependent on bacterial strain, crop species and crop genotype.

These findings support the use of A. brasilense as a microbial component in integrated crop nutrition programs. They do not establish that every strain will mobilize phosphorus, potassium or micronutrients to the same extent.

Application rates depend on the viable-cell concentration, formulation, crop and delivery method. The 108 and 109 CFU/g products should not be applied at the same weight-based rate.

Mixing instructions

Prepare a premix of the required quantity in a small volume of clean water. Stir until uniformly dispersed, then add the premix to the application tank while maintaining agitation. Apply the suspension on the same day and do not store it after dilution.

Application considerations

Apply to seeds, the seed furrow or the active root zone.
Use clean water and avoid strongly chlorinated water.
Do not mix directly with concentrated fertilizers, disinfectants, oxidizing agents or unverified pesticides.
If chemical seed treatment is required, confirm compatibility before combined application.
Apply during cooler parts of the day and avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight.
Maintain normal crop fertilization unless a locally validated nutrient-management program recommends an adjustment.
