
Sulphur-oxidizing bacteria are a functionally diverse group of microorganisms that convert elemental sulphur and other reduced inorganic sulphur compounds into more oxidized forms, including sulfate—the principal form absorbed by plant roots.
These bacteria are not a single taxonomic group.
They include autotrophic, heterotrophic and mixotrophic microorganisms with different environmental requirements and sulphur-oxidation pathways. Their activity forms part of the wider soil sulphur cycle, which also includes microbial immobilization and the mineralization of organically bound sulphur.
In agricultural use, the term sulphur-solubilizing bacteria is frequently used; however, sulphur-oxidizing bacteria more accurately describes the principal biological process involved.
